On September 18, Senator Bill Cassidy, MD (R-LA) delivered remarks on the Senate floor urging congressional action on NFIP.  In front of his Senate colleagues, Senator Cassidy affirmed that “There are two challenges facing Congress in regard to flood insurance. First, we must reauthorize the program so that it does not expire on September 30th at the end of the fiscal year. Second, we must reform the program to make it affordable again.”

Senator Cassidy also spoke to flood losses avoided by proper, proactive investments in flood mitigation infrastructure: “Last week, Louisiana was hit by a hurricane. Nobody loves to hear that. But the good news is that the money our state and country have invested in resiliency is paying off.  Since Hurricane Katrina, we invested 15 billion dollars in the levee system protecting New Orleans. It’s paid dividends.”

Senator Cassidy, throughout 2024, has used this platform to encourage fellow Senators’ collaboration towards NFIP reauthorization and reform.  Senator Cassidy has provided multiple Senate floor speeches on NFIP’s affordability and transparency issues in March, June, July, and August.

Senator Cassidy has also five-post thread on social media, explaining Risk Rating 2.0 and the current “chance to make the NFIP affordable, accountable, and sustainable.”
