EDF released a report, “Recommendations to Better Integrate Nature-Based Solutions into the National Flood Insurance Program,” which assesses how NFIP’s modeling, prices, and programs treat projects like coastal restoration, coral reef protection, and green infrastructure.

CSFI collaborated with EDF through a one-day workshop alongside National Wildlife Federation, Insurance for Good, Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM), and other parters to inform report contents.

Recommendations for NFIP include developing a post-model adjustment for nature-based solutions, better recognizing existing natural assets and nature-based solutions within the catastrophe models, and expanding eligible Community Rating System (CRS) activities.

EDF also published a Market Forces blog post explaining suggested approaches for NFIP to more completely recognize the value of nature in reducing flood impacts.
