The 2025 National Hurricane Conference (NHC) was held in New Orleans  from April 14-17.  NHC is an annual forum to improve hurricane preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation to protect lives and property in the United States and the tropical islands of the Caribbean and Pacific.   GNO, Inc.’s Jasmine Brown DeRousselle joined KPMG’s panel, “From Payouts to Buyouts: The Evolving Landscape of Federal Policy and Insurance in High-Risk Regions,” to discuss CSFI’s work and other national insurance models.  Fellow panelists include Matt Sanders of Pew Charitable Trusts; Scott Shapiro, KPMG’s US Sector Leader for Insurance; and Jeffrey Thomas, KPMG’s Government Services Director.  Panelists identified that “increasingly expensive and frequent disasters are compromising the insurability of communities,” citing the Climate and Community Institute’s Shared Fates white paper and NOAA’s billion-dollar disaster dataset.  Per NOAA, “The 1980–2024 annual average is 9.0 events (CPI-adjusted); the annual average for the most recent 5 years (2020–2024) is 23.0 events (CPI-adjusted).”

CSFI will be present at additional upcoming events.  The Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) Conference will occur on May 18-22 in New Orleans, reflecting on the 20th anniversary of Katrina.  ASFPM is the country’s largest floodplain management conference, with 1,700+ attendees expected.  The State of the Coast (SOC) Conference will also occur in New Orleans on May 20-22.  SOC – the largest coastal community and economy statewide convening – is produced by the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL), The Water Institute, and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA).
