CSFI Legislative Update – September 7, 2017
CSFI Stakeholders –
We’re keeping those in the path of Irma in our thoughts and prayers, as well as those recovering from Harvey.
Today, the Senate is expected to pass an extension of the NFIP through December 8. This extension is attached to the Harvey aid legislation currently moving through Congress, and the December expiration is tied to the expiration of government funding, commonly referred to as a continuing resolution or CR. Once the bill passes the Senate, it will go back to the House for final passage, which is expected to occur by Friday or Saturday. We urge the House to pass the package swiftly to provide aid to Harvey, and now Irma, relief as soon as possible and to avoid a lapse in the NFIP’s authorization.
While we were hopeful to complete a long-term reauthorization of the program before September 30, this clean reauthorization through December 8 buys more time for us to pass true reforms that enhance mitigation, improve mapping, preserve affordability, and increase program participation. We will continue to advocate for these priorities. We urge the Senate Banking committee to take up flood insurance reauthorization as soon as possible to ensure predictability and stability for those recovering from these horrific storms.
As always, please let me know any questions.
Thanks –
Caitlin
