CSFI and Insurance for Good Launch Primer Series
CSFI is collaborating with Insurance for Good on a new educational “Insurance for Good Primer Series.” Our first primer in the series – “What is Reinsurance? Primer #01” – is now live.
This primer explores reinsurance, or “insurance for insurance companies.” Just as insurance protects you from unexpected financial losses, reinsurance protects insurers from large or unpredictable losses. Reinsurance began in the nineteenth century after major urban fires devastated European cities and overwhelmed their local insurers, who had risks concentrated in narrow geographic regions. Companies like Cologne Re and Swiss Re were formed in response to fires in Germany and Switzerland, respectively, and these companies soon spread their risks internationally. Today, more than 200 companies provide reinsurance worldwide, domiciled in four primary markets: Bermuda, the United States, continental Europe, and London.
